If You're Going to San Francisco...

Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair...

I'm heading west at the end of the month for work -- I've never been to San Francisco but I hear I'm about to fall in love.

"All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion"

-Scott McKenzie; Lyrics - San Francisco

Going to San Fran is always a dangerous thing...every time I seriously contemplate staying and never returning home! You will have an amazing time. It won't be as warm as you might expect but it is guaranteed to be beautiful.

Everyone keeps saying I'll fall in love with San Fran. Why? What is it about San Fran that is so wonderful? Of course, I'm going to business, but I'm sure I'll find time to play so if you have some "must-dos" send them along.

Hmm...I think for a first-time business visit, exploring the more famous landmarks and neighborhoods will give you a really good flavor for the city. It's just a beautiful but laid back place, and it's more picturesque than Boston and LA, in my opinion.

My favorite things about San Fran? The architecture, which is unlike any other city I've been to - very colorful and Victorian. The hills are amazing - they really give you a good view of the city and the water. Walking down the zig-zag Lombard Street is a must as is going up to Coit Tower, taking a cable car, and venturing off to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Chinatown there is more vibrant than Boston's. When I was a kid I enjoyed Fisherman's Wharf (similar to our Quincy Market) and the Alcatraz tour. And if you love chocolate, then the Ghirardelli tour is fun. If you like browsing art galleries in a waterfront village, then Sausalito is a nice side trip. It's been a while since I've been, so a guide book will be helpful (am laughing as I realize I'm typing this to a travel writer!)

What are they sending you to San Fran for? Does this get you out of London?

YES! ALCATRAZ! I forgot that's in SF. That will be my must-do. I will be certain to get some great pics of architecture and neighborhoods... the best part of travel writing is taking pictures to go along with the stories.

London was postponed a few weeks. Heading across the pond mid-November so stay tuned for those stories.

Can I work where you guys work? The furthest business trip I've taken this year was to New Hampshire. Not my idea of fun =)
