Tickets for the Day of Atonement

Today is Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement, and the day where Jews congregate at temple for a day of fasting and forgiveness. I don't attend temple on the high holidays because I have a fundamental issue with paying to pray. However, I honor my Jewish heritage and religion throughout the year and I feel good about what I do, so if I don't pay $200-ish to attend high holiday services, I'm quite certain G-d will forgive me.

Of course, if I could get a deal on high holiday tickets I might consider making an appearance...

lol..I love Curb. When I first saw that episode I was shocked that you have to buy such expensive tickets to attend services - I never heard of it before! Is this done in lieu of taking up a weekly collection or are you also asked to pony up every week like us Catholics? My church finally entered the 21st century and started taking donations by monthly direct debit, which I thought was clever and just strange at the same time.

We never really had "donations" at temple. You made them if you chose to, but usually, there were monthly or yearly dues that members paid. Those dues include 1-2-3-4, etc. tickets to high holiday services, based on how many people were in your family. If you weren't a member, you had to pay for the ticket at "face value." I understand the necessity for the keeping the temple running strong and needed the donations of the congregation to do that, but what I don't like is forcing those who aren't members to pay obsence amounts of money to attend a two-hour service for prayer.

I would gladly contribute to the collection fund at temple - I have no problem making a decent donation to the temple if I want to attend high holiday services. I have a problem with them asking me to pay a certain price to attend and then turning people away if they can't afford. I believe in my heart that no temple would turn anyone away due to lack of money, but I also won't clog the pews by paying for a high-priced ticket.

I have my prayers, and I'll say them this evening in the privacy of my own home. That's just as good, right?

Or maybe I'll go the movies. I've been extremely good this year and quite frankly, the past two months have kicked my a**. I've said a few f- words and for those, I repent. But maybe, today I should take time out for me...

of course! I have to believe g-d considers your at-home prayers to be just as good as the ones you would say in your $200 Temple seat. Hope you got to enjoy some quality "me" time (before and after you saved your hard earned $$ from the clusterfck that is the stock market!).
